Antigua citizenship: adding family members after approval
Marriage, birth or adoption can change a family after citizenship has been granted. Antigua and Barbuda permits qualifying additions, subject to the relationship, timing and age conditions. Fees follow that eligibility assessment.

Identify the family relationship first
The CIU’s published categories include a future spouse of the principal applicant and qualifying spouses or children of dependent children. Amendment Regulations No. 50 of 2024 set out the relevant definitions.[1][2] This guide addresses additions under the investment programme; other possible bases of nationality require separate consideration.
Begin by recording who obtained citizenship under which application, and how the new family member is related to that person. A principal applicant’s new spouse and the later spouse of a child included in the original application do not fall under identical provisions.
Whose age matters under the 35-year condition?
The amended regulations address a qualifying dependent child who marries after the original application was approved. To add that child’s spouse, the original dependant must be no older than 35 when the addition application is submitted. A corresponding condition applies when adding that dependant’s child born or legally adopted after approval: the original dependant must be no older than 35 at submission.[1]
In these provisions, the age test concerns the person included as a child in the original application. It should not be indiscriminately applied to the spouse or baby now being added. The CIU website gives a broad family overview, which needs to be read with the relationship and timing conditions in the regulations.[1][2]
For example, where an original dependent child later becomes a parent, the review needs the original approval date, the birth or adoption date and that parent’s age at submission. A birth certificate alone cannot answer every eligibility question.
Separate addition fees from other charges
The regulations and current CIU fee schedule list the following processing fees for post-approval additions. Standard due diligence and passport fees also apply.[1][3] A fee category is not, by itself, evidence that the person qualifies.
| Person being added | Processing fee |
|---|---|
| Child aged 0–5 | 10,000 |
| Child aged 6–17 | 25,000 |
| Dependant aged 18 or over | 50,000 |
For an eligible five-year-old, the US$10,000 processing fee and US$300 passport fee produce a subtotal of US$10,300. Standard due diligence is free for children aged 0–11. For an eligible 12-year-old, processing of US$25,000, due diligence of US$2,000 and a US$300 passport fee total US$27,300.[3]
These calculations by Conatus Mobility exclude professional services, documents, translation, certification, bank charges and other applicable costs. If a birthday is approaching, confirm which dates govern fees and eligibility; the age at an initial consultation should not be assumed to remain the relevant one.
Connect new family documents to the original application
Prepare evidence around the relationship being assessed. Adding the principal applicant’s spouse requires review of the marriage and both identities. Adding a dependent child’s later spouse or child also requires a connection to the original application, that dependant’s identity and the subsequent marriage, birth or lawful adoption.
Collect the existing registration records, current passports and relevant family documents for the authorised agent to review. The agent should confirm the formal checklist, current forms and certification requirements. The CIU publishes forms and guidance, but documents marked as samples should not simply be treated as current filing forms.[4]
State when the family change occurred
If the original application is still being assessed when a marriage, birth or adoption occurs, notify the agent so the appropriate way to update the case can be established. A pending application and a post-citizenship addition should not be treated as having the same timing conditions.
For an existing citizen’s family, a useful addition plan identifies the person, the applicable provision, the relevant dates, required documents and itemised charges. That makes both eligibility and the remaining work visible, without suggesting that payment alone confers citizenship.
