Malta MPRP: temporary residence during an application
A family may be considering a home and a school in Malta while its permanent residence application is still being assessed. Temporary residence has its own application requirements and dates.

A residence route while the application is pending
Regulation 9(6) of the Malta Permanent Residence Programme permits applicants under regulation 9 or 11 to seek a one-year temporary residence permit for themselves and/or their dependants. The Agency determines the documents and procedures required.[1] A temporary permit does not establish that permanent residence has been approved.
For a household preparing to move, a simple record for each person can be more useful than a single family timetable: current permission to enter or remain, the expiry of any temporary permit, and the progress of the permanent application.
Keeping the document deadline separate
The regulation provides for renewal in further one-year periods, subject to the prescribed information and documents for the underlying application being submitted within six months of that application.[1] This is a document deadline, not a promise of a decision within six months.
Ask the licensed agent to identify documents already lodged, outstanding items and evidence that may need refreshing. Different issue dates on financial records and civil documents are easier to manage when each is linked to the relevant submission requirement.
Coordinating a move
Residency Malta presents temporary residence as an option upon application and requires MPRP applications to be submitted through a licensed agent.[2] Obtain the current temporary-permit checklist rather than assuming every permanent-residence requirement applies to that earlier stage in the same way.
A family planning to move before a school term might compare its proposed arrival with the tenancy start date and school reporting date. Discussing flexibility with the relevant parties is practical preparation; it is not an additional immigration rule.
The permanent decision remains separate
The regulations require the conditions for the permanent certificate to be satisfied even after approval in principle.[1] Housing, contributions and the other requirements of the permanent application still need to be completed under the applicable rules.
Temporary residence can help a family connect its move with the assessment process. Major commitments are best based on documents already issued, with flexibility for dates that remain uncertain.
