Australia consults on Genuine Student checks and financial evidence

The consultation considers Australian-account funding models and interim evidence rules. Submissions close on 23 November.

Australia · Open consultation

Australia’s Department of Home Affairs is consulting on the Genuine Student requirement and financial-capacity framework for Student visas. Submissions close at noon AEDT on 23 November 2026. No decisions have been made.[1]

Options include revising Ministerial Direction 106, holding study and living funds in Australian accounts, and recognised education finance. A possible interim measure would require primary applicants from Evidence Level 3 countries to provide stronger evidence at lodgement regardless of provider evidence level. At least six months of transaction history is among the proposals being tested.[2]

The consultation follows reform discussions in Assistant Minister Julian Hill’s 30 October speech. Whether changes proceed, which options are adopted and their timing remain for the government to decide.[1][3]
