Greece confirms first residence-processing support decision as case allocation develops

The ministry reports an initial administrative step and progress on renewal backlogs, while nationwide automation and tax-number integration remain qualified plans.

Greece · First processing-support decision issued

Greece’s Migration and Asylum Ministry reported on 4 November that a first ministerial decision had been issued to support the Evia residence-permit department, following a request from the Thessaly–Central Greece decentralised administration. The announcement does not give the decision’s date or full scope.[1]

The ministry describes a system for allocating initial and renewal applications to competent one-stop services with fewer pending cases, regardless of the applicant’s residence. Service capacity must first be assessed and suitable cases identified. The report does not establish nationwide automatic allocation.[1]

By early November, 65,000 of the 85,000 renewal applications pending when legislation passed in February had been reviewed, not necessarily approved. Automatic tax-number assignment alongside worker admission is targeted for the end of 2026 or early 2027, with social-security-number integration later. The announcement introduces no new residence category and guarantees no processing deadline.[1]
