Iceland consults on higher financial-support thresholds for residence and citizenship

The 3 November draft proposes higher benchmarks and additional requirements for children; these are not current thresholds.

Iceland · Draft consultation

Iceland’s Justice Ministry opened consultation on a draft financial-support regulation for residence and citizenship applications on 3 November 2026. Its table proposes increasing the standard individual benchmark from ISK 259,951 to ISK 501,186 and the childless-couple benchmark from ISK 415,922 to ISK 801,897, with additional amounts for children. Students and certain qualifying young people have lower proposed benchmarks.[1]

The ministry says the draft would not change residence conditions on international-protection or humanitarian grounds or automatically invalidate existing permits. It would apply when applications, including pending cases, are decided. The announcement specifies neither commencement nor the period covered by the amounts, and its prose uses units inconsistently with the table. These figures are a report of the table, not verified operative requirements.[1]
