New Zealand schedules up to 4-year post-study visas for Indian PhD graduates

The 20 October announcement sets 16 November implementation for a specific nationality and qualification group.

New Zealand · Effective 16 November

From 16 November 2026, Indian graduates with New Zealand PhDs will become eligible for Post-Study Work Visas lasting up to 4 years instead of 3. Immigration New Zealand announced the change on 20 October under the India–New Zealand free trade agreement.[1]

This announcement concerns Indian graduates with New Zealand PhDs, not an across-the-board extension for every nationality or qualification. Applicants must meet the relevant visa conditions, and a longer work visa is not a grant of residence. The general application page still shows a 3-year maximum; the announcement does not establish automatic extensions for existing visa holders.[1][2]
