UK government says it has no plans for automatic citizenship for all BN(O)s
A 26 October parliamentary answer restates application-based routes without announcing new citizenship rules.
In its answer to parliamentary question HL3898 on 26 October 2026, the UK government said it had no plans to amend legislation to give British citizenship automatically to all British Nationals (Overseas). The answer also identified existing statutory application routes for BN(O)s who have completed a period of UK residence or have no other citizenship or nationality.[1]
The government reiterated that the BN(O) visa route allows status holders and their dependent family members to apply to live, work and study in the UK, providing a pathway to citizenship and the right of abode. This confirms the government’s position; it does not confer citizenship automatically or announce new eligibility rules or a commencement date.[1]
