Name changes after Antigua investment citizenship: passport restrictions and disclosure

The official FAQ restricts name changes for passport issuance by successful investment citizenship applicants. Application forms also require former names and the reasons for earlier changes.

Antigua and Barbuda’s investment citizenship programme should not be understood as a way to choose an unrelated new passport name. The CIU’s current FAQ cites a Cabinet decision of 11 December 2014 restricting successful applicants from changing their name by deed poll or other means for issuance of an Antigua and Barbuda passport.[1]

This is an existing provision, not an October 2026 announcement. Its stated scope is investment citizenship applicants and passport issuance; it should not be expanded into a claim about every name-change procedure in every jurisdiction.

Disclosing previous names

The official application-form sample asks for legal names shown in the current passport, former or other names, the date and reason for a change, and names on the birth certificate and in the original script. Applicants with multiple passports must provide their details.[2]

Different transliterations, a former surname or discrepancies between older records should therefore be explained during preparation. Applying for another nationality does not remove the need to disclose the earlier identity record.

Name-change evidence and passport rules

A document may establish how a name changed elsewhere. Whether the passport authority accepts that name is a separate question. The cited FAQ passage does not expressly provide general exceptions for marriage, divorce or registration errors.[1]

Those circumstances need confirmation through the licensed agent or competent passport authority, supported by records connecting the names. Explain whether the issue is a spelling correction or an intentional change, rather than treating every discrepancy alike.

Accurate disclosure and citizenship status

The CIU’s citizenship page lists false application information as a ground of ineligibility and identifies fraud or wilful concealment of material facts as grounds for deprivation of citizenship.[3]

A coherent account of which name appeared where, when it changed and why is therefore central to preparation. It is more useful than assuming that a new passport creates an entirely separate identity history.
