A child approaching 16 may already need police clearance for St Kitts citizenship
The filing date and the child’s next birthday need to be considered together.
Police certificates are required at 16 and also for applicants who will turn 16 within three months of submission. This is not a processing timeline.
A child does not necessarily have to be 16 on the filing date to need a police certificate. The St Kitts and Nevis Citizenship by Investment Unit’s 2024 official brochure includes applicants who will turn 16 within three months of submission, alongside the main applicant and dependants already aged 16 or over.[1]
Look beyond the age on the application date
The relevant comparison is between the intended submission date and the child’s 16th birthday. The brochure does not make the date of an initial consultation or service agreement the starting point. Nor does this rule require the family to wait for the birthday before beginning an application.[1]
For example, a family intending to file in October for a child turning 16 that December should include police clearance in its preparation. This illustrates the timing only. An authorised agent should confirm cases close to the three-month boundary using the actual dates.
Recheck when the filing timetable changes
A postponed filing date can bring a child into the relevant age window. A useful working practice is to review the dates when preparation begins and again before submission, especially when relatives are collecting documents in different countries.
The CIU’s current application-process page lists police clearance; the authorised agent should confirm the latest checklist for the actual submission.[2] The agent should establish which jurisdictions, document formats and issue-date limits apply to the actual file. The three months discussed here concerns an approaching birthday; it is not a statement about a certificate’s validity.
Keep document and interview requirements separate
Obtaining police clearance does not determine whether a dependant must attend an interview or establish that all background checks are complete. Interview participation is addressed in the separate linked article.
A family schedule can record each child’s birth date, expected filing date and the documents confirmed by the agent. Update it when the timetable moves. This article explains an existing requirement in the official materials; it does not present the age rule as a new October 2026 announcement.
