Malaysia announces work access for Category I Employment Pass spouses from 2027
The 9 October budget announcement covers spouses who hold a Dependant Pass, from 1 January 2027 and subject to prescribed conditions.
Malaysia’s Budget 2027 speech, delivered on 9 October 2026, announced that spouses of Category I Employment Pass holders who themselves hold a Dependant Pass will be permitted to work from 1 January 2027, subject to prescribed conditions.[1][2]
The announcement is limited to that group of spouses. The speech does not specify the application procedure, permitted work or approval conditions, or announce that applications have opened. Prospective applicants need to follow the implementing requirements rather than treat the budget statement as immediate permission to start work.[1][2]
