Sweden implements family-residence changes and options for young adults
Rules effective from 1 October widen some young adults’ application options while tightening parts of family immigration.
On 1 October, the Swedish Migration Agency announced implementation and resumed relevant paused young-adult cases. Former child dependants aged 18 to under 21 may seek an extension to remain with a parent. Those aged 21 or over must live with the parent and show exceptional dependency beyond ordinary adult family ties.[1][2]
Until 31 December 2027, qualifying adults who held child-dependent residence after 1 October 2023 may apply within Sweden for another permit, including work or university studies, while meeting its ordinary conditions. Transitional provisions also cover eligible people whose expulsion decisions became final on or after 1 January 2025.[1]
For affected people whose removal is temporarily suspended, the agency recommends a new application as soon as possible, preferably by 1 December 2026. That recommendation does not replace the overall transitional deadline.[1]
Maintenance requirements increase and extend to renewals. The higher amount is waived for permits granted before 1 October 2026 where renewal is sought by 1 October 2027. A sponsor with temporary residence generally also needs 2 years’ permitted residence when the family applies. Work-permit holders, researchers, doctoral students, EU Blue Card and ICT holders and certain other groups follow different rules and are exempt from that 2-year requirement.[1][2]
