UK opens lead-sponsor applications for community and refugee study routes
The 29 October guidance starts organisation-level applications; the refugee work route is planned for spring 2027.
Home Office guidance published on 29 October opens lead-sponsor applications for named community sponsorship and refugee study. UK charities and community interest companies can apply. The refugee work route is planned for spring 2027; these routes are separate from the existing Community Sponsorship Scheme.[1][3]
Organisations must have been registered and operating for at least 1 year, demonstrate capacity and resources, and have a board with more than 50% British or Irish citizens. Each route requires a separate application. This is lead-sponsor accreditation, not an opening of all individual refugee visa applications.[1][4]
The initial countries are Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Egypt, Uganda and Kenya. Proposed beneficiaries must be outside their country of nationality or, if stateless, their former country of habitual residence and have been present and registered with relevant authorities or UNHCR before 1 October 2026. Arrangements where registration is restricted remain subject to further detail. Refugee or protection, route-specific and security requirements also apply.[2]
Admitted refugees will initially receive 5 years’ leave. Lead sponsors cannot themselves approve admission or grant status. Accreditation or sponsorship does not guarantee admission or confer permanent residence automatically.[2]
