US cuts the basic response period for refugee termination notices to 10 days

An interim final rule effective on 14 October replaces the 30-day period. Mail service adds three days, and weekend or federal-holiday deadline rules still apply.

United States · Interim final rule in force

An interim final rule published and effective on 14 October 2026 changes 8 CFR 207.9. Where USCIS proposes to terminate refugee status because the person did not meet the refugee definition when admitted, the basic period for presenting written or oral evidence against termination falls from 30 days to 10.[1]

The period runs from service under the applicable rules. Mail service is counted from mailing and adds three days. A deadline falling on a Saturday, Sunday or federal holiday moves to the next business day. This concerns refugee-status termination, not a general deadline for asylum applications. Comments are due before midnight Eastern Time at the end of 13 November 2026.[1]
