When do Korean investor residents join National Health Insurance?
Employment, residence category and family eligibility determine the route. Investment approval alone does not set the insurance start date.
Check employee insurance or eligible dependent coverage first. Other F2 holders generally enter regional insurance after six months of residence. F5 has an earlier eligibility rule; NHIS confirms the individual start date.
After obtaining Korean investor residence, first establish whether employee insurance applies or whether you qualify as a dependent of an employee-insured person. Foreign residents without either form of coverage then need to assess regional insurance eligibility.[1][3]
F2 and F5 have different timing rules
Registered F2 residents meeting regional-insurance conditions generally become eligible after six months in Korea. F5 permanent residents fall within an earlier-eligibility category: NHIS lists the entry date, or the foreign-registration date if registration occurs later.[1]
For an F2-to-F5 change inside Korea, ask NHIS to confirm the start date using the status-change record. Do not assume another six-month period begins. Travel history, registration and existing coverage can affect the assessment.
What the 2026 premium figure means
Regional premiums are calculated using income, property and other applicable information. Where the foreign-resident average-premium floor applies, an assessment below that average is raised to it. NHIS publishes a 2026 monthly average of KRW158,630, including long-term care insurance.[2]
This is not a universal quote for every investor household. F5 and F6 regional subscribers are assessed on the same basis as Korean nationals, so the foreign-resident average should not automatically be treated as their minimum. Employee insurance follows separate earnings-based rules.[2][3]
Family and private cover require separate checks
Combining regional premiums for a household involves address and relationship conditions. NHIS describes spouses and children under 19, supported by family documents. Adult children do not automatically share one bill merely because they hold residence as accompanying family members.[2]
Dependent coverage through an employee-insured person has its own relationship, income and property tests.[1] It is a different mechanism from combining regional premiums.
Foreign or private medical insurance does not automatically remove the national-insurance obligation. Any applicable exclusion requires the prescribed application and evidence of coverage.[1] Confirm the insurance category, eligibility date and billing record promptly after moving.
