South Korea Investor Residence: Registration, Moving Home and New Passports

After obtaining investor residence, family members may still need to register and report changes to their address or passport. These duties have different deadlines and should be handled for each person.

When do you need to register after arrival?

The immigration authority’s Visa Navigator explains that foreign nationals intending a long stay generally need to register within 90 days of entry.[1] If you change status while already in Korea, check whether your existing registration needs updating. A new approval should not automatically be treated as a fresh 90-day period.

Check your passport, residence approval, entry date and any previous registration records. Evidence of an investment, permission to stay and resident registration serve different purposes. Confirm the documents and booking procedure through Hi Korea or the responsible immigration office.[2]

Family members arriving on different dates may have different deadlines. The main applicant’s registration does not automatically complete the process for everyone else.

How soon must you report a move or a new passport?

The official guide gives generally registered foreign residents 15 days after moving into a new home to report the address change. New passport details must be reported within 45 days of the passport’s issue date.[1] These are separate deadlines with different starting points.

If a family moves home and later receives new passports, both changes need attention. The passport deadline runs from issue, rather than collection. Other statuses, including F-4, have different rules and should not be confused with an investor’s F-2 or F-5 status.

Use the receiving office’s checklist for housing evidence, passport documents and any other required records. Keep confirmation of the update and check that names, addresses and passport numbers have been recorded correctly.

What happens after an online submission?

Check whether the application has been accepted, whether further documents are needed and whether the update is complete. A booking confirmation, successful upload and completed procedure are different stages. Keep the application number, submission date and subsequent replies.

Review each family member’s details separately. Do not assume that changing one person’s address updates everyone at the same home. If a deadline has passed, contact the responsible office with the actual dates and ask how to proceed. Records should not be backdated.

Does a child born in Korea need separate permission?

Yes. The immigration guide states that a foreign child born in Korea must obtain an appropriate status of stay or leave within 90 days of birth.[1] A parent’s investor residence does not replace the child’s own procedure.

Families expecting a child can ask in advance about birth registration, the child’s travel document and immigration permission. The available status and documents depend on the parents’ status and the family’s circumstances.

Keep the investment holding period, each person’s residence permission, resident registration and passport dates as separate records. Our related article covers F-5 applications and return of capital after the five-year investment period. The day-to-day registration duties described here still need to be completed by their own deadlines.
