Nauru: renewing abroad
Many new citizens continue living elsewhere. Looking after the first citizenship certificate and passport creates a useful foundation for renewal years later.

Confirm a channel for overseas renewal
The Naoero Program Office says renewals can be handled through its office or relevant diplomatic missions and do not require a local address. Its FAQ currently describes a ten-year passport validity.[1] Use the expiry date printed in the issued passport to determine when renewal is needed.
Someone living overseas can establish the appropriate receiving office, submission method and original-document requirements in advance. The availability of renewal does not imply identical procedures, postal services or processing times at every mission.
Use the rules for programme citizens
Regulations gazetted on 19 May 2025 specifically address passports for people granted citizenship under the 2024 economic and climate resilience legislation. Regulation 3 covers citizenship evidence, photographs and identity documents; renewal also requires the biodata page of the current or expired passport.[2]
Explain the citizenship route when requesting the current form. An older general passport form found online should not be assumed suitable simply because it includes a renewal section.
Check certification and identity details
The regulations require two recent photographs, one certified on the back by a Commissioner for Oaths or notary. The responsible official may request additional information.[2] Confirm the current photograph specifications and certification format before submission.
A practical archive can keep the citizenship certificate, successive passport biodata pages and any lawful name-change records together. Scans help with reference; originals need separate safekeeping. Where names differ, explain the discrepancy to the receiving authority and establish the appropriate correction or evidence procedure.
Fit travel around actual documents
Renewal remains subject to providing the necessary documentation.[1] The public explanation does not promise the same completion time for every overseas case. Ask about processing and the return of originals before committing to travel.
If a visa remains in the old passport or a residence record uses its number, include that in the follow-up list for the relevant issuing authority. Keeping the earlier records makes the relationship between old and new documents easier to establish.
