Hong Kong New CIES annual reporting: the applicant’s and intermediary’s roles
The applicant’s anniversary documents and the intermediary’s account report run in parallel. Assign responsibility and retain a separate submission record for each.
After each anniversary of Formal Approval, the applicant has one month for the required submission. The financial intermediary separately reports on designated accounts within 14 working days. These are different obligations, not a comparison of equivalent durations.
New CIES anniversary reporting can be due before a residence extension is needed. Section 6.2 requires the applicant to engage a practising accountant and submit the Fulfillment document and PMR Anniversary Statement within one month after the first and each subsequent anniversary of Formal Approval.[1]
Build the calendar from Formal Approval
Use the Immigration Department’s Formal Approval date. The account-opening date, first investment transaction and visa expiry serve different purposes and should not replace it.
As a practical working arrangement, record the anniversary, the planned date for collecting accountant-ready information and the intended submission date together. Preparing early allows time to reconcile the records without changing the official submission window.
The intermediary has a separate deadline
The financial intermediary reports on the designated account within 14 working days after the first and each subsequent anniversary of Formal Approval.[2] This obligation runs alongside the applicant’s submission. A bank or broker’s report does not establish that the applicant’s documents have also been delivered.
The deadlines use different units and should not be collapsed into one fixed-day countdown. Confirm what each intermediary will provide and when, then match those records to the accountant’s preparation list.
Explain changes in the portfolio
The official statement guidance addresses opening asset positions, transactions during the period and declarations. It requires applicant and practising-accountant particulars and the applicant’s signed acknowledgement of the declaration.[3]
Group statements, transactions and explanations by designated account. For multiple accounts, company-held assets or property, the records should connect clearly enough to avoid double counting or overlooking changes between reporting dates. A single valuation cannot explain the entire period.
Make the handover specific
Confirm which designated accounts each intermediary’s report covers, who supplies the accountant-ready statements and who resolves discrepancies. This is a practical coordination step, not an additional statutory filing.
Retain the applicant’s submission acknowledgement and obtain confirmation of the intermediary’s report separately. If either set needs correction, identify the affected document and responsible party so one correction is not mistaken for completion of the other task.
Anniversary reporting remains separate from assessment for an extension of stay; the official documents page lists the procedures separately.[4] Sources were checked on 17 October 2026. The article concerns the current New CIES and focuses on the two reporting responsibilities.
