After Turkish citizenship, how long can a foreign driving licence be used?
Turkish citizens and foreign nationals have different foreign-licence time limits. Check the entry date, translation requirement and licence-conversion procedure.
The period is linked to entry. Citizenship or passport collection is not presented as an automatic reset date.
Turkish citizens may generally drive in Türkiye with a foreign licence for up to two years from entry. The corresponding period for foreign nationals is six months. After acquiring Turkish citizenship, a person should not assess the position solely under the visitor’s six-month rule, or start a new two-year clock from the day a Turkish passport is collected.[1][2]
For an investor family preparing to live in Türkiye, driving is a separate practical matter. A passport establishes nationality; the licence and applicable conditions establish what may be driven and for how long.
Six months also triggers a translation requirement
An official notice published by Türkiye’s Consulate General in Urmia on 20 August 2026 cites article 88 of the Road Traffic Regulation. For Turkish citizens, the foreign-licence period runs from entry. After more than six months in Türkiye, drivers must also carry a Turkish translation certified by a notary or an overseas mission.[2]
Being within two years therefore does not mean that the foreign licence alone is sufficient. Keep the entry record, licence expiry and translation status together rather than checking only the expiry printed on one document.
If citizenship was acquired during a stay, or the entry history is complicated, ask the competent authority to assess the actual dates and status. This article does not treat naturalisation as automatically starting a fresh two-year period, or recommend brief departures as a way to reset it.
Temporary use and conversion are different questions
The population and citizenship authority, NVI, confirms the two-year period for Turkish citizens and six months for foreign nationals. Its FAQ states that a Turkish licence is required after the relevant period. Converting a foreign licence is a separate application involving verification.[1]
Someone planning a longer stay can ask NVI in advance whether the issuing country, licence category and current status permit conversion, and what authentication is required. Acquiring nationality does not replace that assessment. Nor should a person whose driving entitlement has been suspended or withdrawn assume that another foreign document permits continued driving.[2]
Match the conversion documents to the current identity record
NVI’s appointment FAQ lists the original foreign licence and colour copy, a notarised or consular-certified Turkish translation, identification, a driver’s medical report, photograph and education evidence among the conversion documents. Applicable fees and records must also be checked. Education documents obtained abroad have their own translation requirements; these are not the same document as the licence translation.[3]
| Level of review | Question to resolve |
|---|---|
| Driving now | Current status, entry date, valid licence and vehicle category |
| After six months | Certified translation for a citizen using a foreign licence |
| Longer-term driving | Conversion eligibility, evidence, appointment and completion |
Where naturalisation involved a new name, connect the identity document, foreign licence and relevant name records before asking whether further evidence is needed. A translation should accurately represent the original document, rather than changing names or categories simply to resemble a new passport.
Establish what happens to the original licence
NVI also states that a foreign licence exchanged for a Turkish one is sent to its issuing country under the applicable procedure. Conversion should not therefore be assumed to leave the holder with both physical cards.[1]
Before proceeding, consider any later overseas driving needs alongside the handling of the original document. Confirming both points helps the household maintain its daily transport in Türkiye without discovering a document gap only when preparing for another international trip.
