Lost Turkish passport abroad: replacement and temporary travel documents
Report the loss to the Turkish mission and confirm the replacement process. A temporary passport covers an authorised one-way journey, with the route and validity checked for the case.
After a loss report, the mission assesses replacement or a temporary passport. The temporary document covers an authorised one-way journey; confirm its destination, validity and transit requirements.
If a Turkish passport is lost abroad, report the loss to the relevant Turkish mission and apply for a replacement. For urgent travel, ask whether a temporary passport is appropriate. The Foreign Ministry describes it as a one-way document that expires after the authorised journey; subsequent travel requires a new passport.[1]
Explain the loss, your location and intended destination to the mission before making further arrangements. An ordinary replacement and a temporary passport serve different travel needs.
Report the loss and prepare identity records
Useful information includes a Turkish identity card, the original passport number or retained copy, and the local loss or police report. The official temporary-passport checklist requires a police report for applications arising from loss.[1]
A passport copy can help identify the missing document, but cannot be used for travel.[1] If the usual identity documents are unavailable, tell the mission when seeking an appointment so that it can explain the additional verification needed.
Ordinary replacement procedures should also be checked with the receiving mission. For example, the Los Angeles consulate’s 2024 instructions specify an in-person appointment and a police report for loss.[2] Confirm its current document and appointment requirements before attending.
Confirm the permitted route and validity
The Foreign Ministry’s detailed FAQ mentions travel to Türkiye or the holder’s usual place of residence, with possible validity adjustments for route requirements. A shorter answer on the same page refers only to returning to Türkiye.[1] The issuing mission should resolve the destination and validity for the particular journey.
Also check acceptance at any transit point and the carrier’s boarding requirements. Permission for one journey does not establish that the document can support the rest of a multi-country itinerary.
Follow through on issue and replacement
The mission determines when a temporary passport can be delivered.[1] Avoid basing inflexible bookings solely on an assumed turnaround while identity checks or issue remain outstanding.
If the original passport is found after being reported lost, request the required record update through a Turkish population office or mission, and confirm its status before use.[1] Follow up on the replacement separately, and ask the relevant foreign authorities how any visas or residence documents in the missing passport should be handled.
