When can Turkish citizenship be cancelled, and what happens to the family?

False declarations or material concealment can lead to cancellation of Turkish citizenship. Family consequences depend on how nationality was acquired; correction and withdrawal follow different provisions.

A grant of Turkish citizenship can be cancelled if it resulted from the applicant’s false declaration or concealment of important facts underlying the grant. Articles 31 and 32 of Citizenship Law No. 5901 also matter to families: cancellation extends to a spouse and children who acquired citizenship through the person concerned.[1]

For an investment applicant, the accuracy of the original file remains important after approval. Collecting a passport does not put the evidence on which nationality was granted beyond scrutiny.

The reason for the original grant matters

Article 31 connects the false statement or concealment to the decision granting citizenship.[1] A discrepancy therefore needs to be understood in context: what was submitted, what the original evidence shows and whether the difference affects the basis of the grant. A report that a file contains a problem is not, by itself, a determination that its holder has lost citizenship.

On 4 August 2026, Türkiye’s Ministry of Justice announced that legal proceedings had begun to cancel the citizenship of 687 people. Its account concerned an investigation into false valuations, sham property sales and fictitious movements of money.[2] That announcement illustrates scrutiny after naturalisation. It does not establish that cancellation was completed in every case, or that all property-based applicants face the same allegations.

A purchaser should retain the actual payment records, valuation material and investment certification. Where the documents and money paid do not agree, a Turkish-qualified lawyer should assess the original evidence and transaction. A seller’s reassurance cannot resolve that legal question.

Establish how each relative acquired citizenship

Under Article 32, cancellation takes effect from the date of the decision and also applies to a spouse and children whose citizenship was derived from the person concerned.[1] The relevant connection is the legal basis of acquisition, rather than kinship alone.

Review each family member’s citizenship decision and population record. Establish who acquired nationality through the principal applicant and whether anyone has an independent basis. Neither collecting passports together nor a child subsequently reaching adulthood is a substitute for examining those records. The consequences for a particular relative require an assessment of their own legal position and the decision involved.

A correction is different from cancellation

Article 39 provides for the General Directorate to correct or complete material errors or omissions in decisions, consistently with the underlying records. Article 40 separately concerns withdrawal of decisions later found to have been made without the legal conditions being met, or in duplicate.[1]

These provisions should not be treated as interchangeable with Article 31. A transcription discrepancy, an incomplete record and an alleged false declaration can raise different questions. Correcting a document is not a guarantee that a defect in eligibility has been cured.

Preserve the decision and the application file

Anyone receiving an official notice should keep the complete notice, evidence of service, original application, investment records and family citizenship documents, and obtain prompt advice from a Turkish-qualified lawyer. The first questions concern the provision invoked, the disputed facts and the people affected. Any deadline or remedy must be established for the decision and circumstances concerned.

For families still preparing an application, the useful safeguard is a clear record of what each person declared and what actually occurred. Understand every statement signed and every payment made. Accurate, traceable evidence offers a sounder basis for the application than assurances that a passport ends all further scrutiny.
