Malaysia MM2H: Work Rights and Children’s Schooling
Federal MM2H can provide long-term residence for a family. Work rights and children’s education still depend on the category, each person’s immigration permission and the school’s requirements.

Can MM2H holders work in Malaysia?
It depends on the category. The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture states that employment and business activities are permitted under Platinum. Silver, Gold and Special Economic Zone participants need an appropriate alternative pass for those activities.[1] This article covers the federal programme. People approved under earlier terms or state programmes should check their own conditions.
The official Platinum page lists business, investment and career activities as permitted.[4] Separate professional, industry or business licences may still be required. Before taking a job or running a company, explain the proposed activity to the relevant authority and confirm which permissions are needed.
The category descriptions do not settle every question about remote work, internships or part-time work. An overseas employer or a small number of working hours does not, by itself, establish permission. The location, duties, employer and payment terms all help the authority assess the activity.
Can children attend school as dependants?
The official Silver conditions allow accompanying children to continue their education at recognised institutions, including higher education. They describe the use of MM2H status or a student pass.[2] This does not guarantee admission, a place on a course or a particular fee rate.
Give the school’s international student office the child’s age, passport details, current permission and proposed start date. Ask whether a student pass or another immigration step is needed, and who handles the application. School admission and immigration permission should both be clear before the family commits to a move.
If family members arrive at different times, keep a separate record for each person. A parent’s approval does not mean that the child’s paperwork is complete.
Can an adult child start work after graduation?
Silver and Gold conditions require accompanying children aged 21 to 34 to remain unmarried and unemployed while in Malaysia.[2][3] Residence as a dependant, or graduation from a local institution, does not provide automatic permission to work.
For example, a 23-year-old dependant who receives a job offer should confirm the required work pass and any change to their dependant status before starting the job. A change in marital status also requires a fresh check of eligibility.
Does passport expiry affect the pass?
Yes. The official conditions explain that pass validity is affected by passport validity.[3] The five-, fifteen- or twenty-year period advertised for a category should not be treated as the expiry date of every family member’s current document.
Record each person’s passport and pass expiry dates alongside school and graduation dates. Review the relevant permissions when someone renews a passport, changes school or prepares to start work. These practical details help determine whether a category suits the family’s plans.
