Malaysia will introduce enhanced renewal rules for the DE Rantau Nomad Pass on 1 December 2026, allowing eligible holders to stay for up to 4 years in total. The extension is not yet in force as at 3 November. Nor does it mean that a single pass will be issued for 4 years: the ceiling combines the initial permission and approved renewals.[1][2]

For someone already living in Malaysia, the useful question is which conditions will apply to the next application, rather than simply how much time the new ceiling offers.

A longer ceiling, with separate renewal decisions

The framework allows an initial pass of up to 12 months and as many as 3 renewals, each for up to 12 months. Approval remains conditional. Holders who have exhausted the existing 24-month allowance may seek further renewals from 1 December. DE Rantau remains temporary permission, not a route to permanent residence or citizenship.[2]

The income test changes for applications from December

For new and renewal applications submitted from 1 December 2026, the minimum annual income for Tech Talent rises from USD24,000 to USD36,000. The Non-Tech Talent threshold remains USD60,000. An existing pass can remain valid until its approved expiry, subject to its conditions; a later renewal must meet the applicable new requirements.[2]

An earlier approval therefore does not settle eligibility for the next period. The existing expiry date and the date of the next submission answer different questions.

November’s closure concerns new applications

MDEC announced on 29 October that new applications would be suspended from 1 to 30 November, reopening on 1 December. Eligible first renewals continue during the transition.[1]

The FAQ limits that transition provision to holders whose initial 12-month pass expires on or before 31 January 2027, with a complete submission within the prescribed timeline. Second and third renewals open on 1 December 2026.[2]

Additional evidence for the second renewal

A second-renewal application requires a Renewal Eligibility Report covering the initial pass and first renewal, with evidence of professional activity and income, together with applicable tax filings, payments and confirmation that no tax remains outstanding.[2]

The FAQ gives inconsistent timing advice: question 25 permits submission within the 3 months before expiry, while question 36 recommends at least 3 months beforehand. Confirm the permitted date with MDEC. Required endorsement must be completed before expiry; neither submission nor renewal approval should be treated as automatically extending existing immigration status.[2]
