UAE Golden Visa: work permits and employment formalities
Long-term residence supports life and work in the UAE. Taking a particular job still involves the labour procedures that apply to the employer.

Residence and employment have distinct roles
The UAE’s work-permit system includes a category for establishments wishing to employ Golden Residency holders. The implementing labour regulations provide for that permit to be requested by an establishment registered with MOHRE.[1][2]
A valid residence document and the status of a new employment application should therefore be checked separately. Ask the employer’s HR team which permit applies, who submits it and when work may lawfully begin.
Identify the contracting employer
The Dubai Government Media Office’s explanation of Cabinet Resolution No. 1 of 2022 identifies the employing establishment as the party requesting this permit.[2] The company signing the employment contract matters; a group’s trading name or the office location may not identify the responsible entity.
Compare the company’s legal name, role, remuneration and proposed start date with the application documents. If moving from another job, ask how the previous contract and permit will be concluded and how the new process will connect. The applicable authority and employers should confirm the procedure.
Free zones require their own check
ADGM provides a concrete example. Its Registration Authority’s work-permit guide includes Golden Visa holders among employees for whom an ADGM employer must obtain a permit.[3] This is ADGM’s own framework; the MOHRE process should not be assumed to cover every company in the UAE.
Establish the company’s actual regulatory jurisdiction. The emirate on a residence document, a familiar business name and a physical office address do not answer that question on their own.
Independent work is a different situation
Official guidance lists freelance permission as a separate category.[1] Someone planning to provide services independently should describe the activity and client relationship before checking the appropriate permit, rather than relying on the process for an employee.
Keep the residence document, applicable work permission and signed contract together. They establish different facts and provide a useful starting point when an employer, activity or working relationship changes.
