UAE Golden Residency: how long can family stay after the sponsor’s death?

The UAE’s official guidance allows sponsored family members to remain for the validity of their existing residence permits after a Golden Residency sponsor dies. The event does not start a new residence term.

If a UAE Golden Residency sponsor dies, sponsored family members may remain in the UAE for the validity of the residence permits already granted to them. ICP states this expressly in its Golden Residency Guide.[1]

The immediate reference point is each family member’s existing expiry date. The rule provides continuity while the family addresses its affairs; it does not restart a full Golden Residency term.

Read each person’s current expiry date

The protection refers to the permits already issued.[1] Check the actual records for every sponsored person rather than relying only on the principal holder’s card.

For illustration, suppose a family member’s permit expires in June 2029 and the sponsor dies in June 2027. The relevant period is the remaining validity of that permit. The event does not generate a new term to 2037. These dates illustrate the distinction and are not an individual ruling.

Residence and inheritance need separate attention

The family protection provision addresses continuing residence. It does not itself settle property succession, bank accounts, company ownership or every requirement for a future renewal.[1]

Where the sponsor’s status was based on real estate, organise the residence records and estate matters separately. Remaining permission to stay does not mean inheritance formalities are complete. Nor does eventual inheritance establish that a new Golden Residency application will succeed.

A practical starting file lists each person’s current permit, passport and identity documents, alongside the family change that the relevant authorities need to address. Confirm the necessary procedures with the issuing authority.

Resolve the next status before expiry

The provision does not promise a new permit at expiry. Families intending to remain should establish the available category, applicant and evidence in advance. ICP also requires valid health insurance throughout residence for real-estate investors and their family members.[1]

This explanation concerns the death of a Golden Residency sponsor. Divorce, employer-sponsored residence, voluntary cancellation and other changes call for their own rules.
